Becoming a nurse and half term antics

So I had my first week of a seven week placement within a children's day surgery/assessment ward. Over the next few weeks I will be documenting my progress and anything I would like to refer back to on my nursing blog - Learning to use Eeyore's Fob Watch.

Of course it had to be half term didn't it and my shifts are 0730-1730 but luckily Monday was a bank holiday and the ward is shut Wednesdays so B and I did get to spend SOME time together! She doesn't mind although I did the earlier part of the week as she had been ill most of the bank holiday weekend. But she brightened up by end of Tuesday. She has had a creative week, making an extremely large card for her godmother's birthday and painting and decorating a box for her. She has also been to the cinema twice!

On Wednesday her new Occupational Therapist from Social Services came round to assess her stand transfers. Outcome was her kerb crawler on her wheelchair is literally in the way and she gets her feet stuck alot trying to turn around. The stand transfer aid they gave us last year is too heavy and cumbersome to use all the time so as she is going to a Paediatric Moving and Handling day next week, she may come back with some ideas. Not sure B is really classed as Paeds equipment anymore as she is 5ft 5! but hey! I am much more back aware since starting my course and I am putting a strain on myself. We also need to get her to take her trousers off whilst lying on the bed rather than standing, leaning up against me and me twisting my back all the time.

I also need to think about camping and getting her up off the floor....I want to take the Molift portable hoist but the legs need to go under her bed..bit difficult when it is a blow up bed....thinking cap needs to come on.
